How Will You Design 2018?

Welcome to 2018! How will you design your year? Or will you let outer circumstances dictate the coming year? The time and energy it takes to artfully design your year is sooooo worth the effort.

Your first step is to create clarity.

Most people are rather fuzzy on their results. Consider the entrepreneur who’s designing, experimenting and expanding their business, and the business takes more time than expected from their spouse and trips to the gym. They’re proud of their clarity with their business, but aren’t prepared for the impact on their family and health. Consider the business owner whose focus is on their exit strategy, but they haven’t thought through the impact of their non-working hours on key relationships. Most business owners are neither starting nor stopping their business. They’re taking care of clients, employees, inventory and so on, but markets change. Innovative and successful, entrepreneurs and business owners tend to rely on their ability to shift when the need arises and skip the investment of time, resources and creativity to craft a clear vision. They may have a tired vision that no longer sparks their enthusiasm.

It’s not just your vision that needs clarity.

Why are you doing what you’re doing? If your answer is, “To make money,” it’s not enough for the long haul. Does your WHY energize you? Does it match your talent, personality and sense of purpose? Do you greet most days with enthusiasm, inspired by your day to day activities? If the answer is, “No,” it’s time to revisit this. Whether it takes a few tweaks or a genuine overhaul, getting to a clear “Yes” on this question can change the quality of your life.

A year ago, Ryan was headed for burnout.

He started his career running errands in his father’s construction company and worked his way up to runningthe business- only tolose it all during the Great Recession. His father retired. Ryan starteda new business. He didn’t realizehow much he needed to retool his skills, nor that his new skills would bring him out of his zone of genius. You see, Ryan is great at sizing up new projects, putting together deals and managing people to great results, but his new business required him to focuson details and build an infrastructure. What made him successful in his father’s much larger construction company, wasn’t sufficient to build a successful startup. Soon Ryan was taking business inconsistent with his brand – so he could pay the bills. Even with a seasoned team, he worked crazy long hours. He struggled for years and over time, he was uninspired by what he did.

He hired me to help him “Go BIG Without Burnout.”

We started by identifying his area of genius and WHY he enjoys construction. Next, we crafted a clear vision for both his business and his life. Having answered WHY and WHAT, we shifted our attention to WHO. We identified the areas with the greatest impact on his business. He needed to hire people, inspired by his vision, with skills to complement his own, so he’d struggle less. He hired someone in the field who required less supervision. Then he selected computer technology to consolidate critical areas in his business and enhance communication with staff, clients and vendors. Finally, he hired an Office Manager, who thrives on computer technology to help him build his business infrastructure.

During the past four months, Ryan completed several projects. His new projects are consistent with his brand. It’ll take another 90 days for his new computer system to be fully functioning, but even now, significantly more of his daily activities are in his zone of genius. His monthly revenue is up. He has more time with his family, works out at the gym four days a week and smiles more. For the first time in a long time, he’s looking forward to the New Year.

How will you design your New Year,so that when you reach January 2019 and look back on 2018, you’re delighted by the choices you made?

That’s a great question, whether you run a business or not.
